Art 115

Hey!

This column will be dedicated to present the work I have done in class.

I will be adding comments of my design process - techniques, goals, inspiration - sharing pictures of the materials, the projects, and anything else I think useful.

Master Muse Project

Hey,

For my final project I decided work with the painting of Kenneth Noland, No.One, 1958.

I liked this painting especially because of the contrast between the colors. It also has an interesting asymmetrical balance, one of elements of 2D design that I most feel connected to. Therefore, I started working on it.

My dot studies is basically limited to the colors used in the painting, so I decided to work on my final project with the pure colors presented in the original one, some achromatic colors and muted colors adding more of white or my own black (mixing blue and brow).
My color study is based on the following colors:

  1. Blue-violet
  2. Red-orange
  3. Orange
  4. Green (done by mixing of blue-violet and orange)
  5. Light pink
  6. White
  7. Black
For the design part, I found that one of the biggest expressions on this painting is the geometry - the (almost) perfect circles. So, i decided to keep this idea, but instead of repeat the circles, I decided to use the "direct" opposite of it: squares, linear forms.
This was my first rough sketch:

In the next weeks I will post my final project!

Below are some of the nice inspiration I found during the studies of this project.
All of the paintings are from  Lyubov Popova. This work is called "Painterly-Architectonic".

The other artist that inspired me was Rothko.

Simultaneous Contrast

Hello,

This is the project mentioned in the part "Papers on the table". It is the work I did for the color interaction studies, the Bezold effect.

In sequence, the exercise was make the color in the little square in the middle of each big ones:
  1. Appear to be two different colors in a achromatic grey; (same color in both little squares)
  2. Appear to be two different colors in muted colors; (same color in both little squares)
  3. Shift in hue but not in value;   (same color in both little squares)
  4. Shift both hue and value.  (same color in both little squares)
  5. Make to different colors look alike. (now we change the color of the little squares!)
  6. Create a composition with the same colors we used in our studies in order to see the effects of color interaction. .

Outside Lies Magic - II

Hey,

Let's show the part 2!

The next photos will show my work with black and white paintings, and my variations of color while I was trying to find the perfect red and green for my two-color painting.
Before everything, I just thought it is important to say - I had never painted anything with acrylic before this class! So that I had a interesting experience with it.

1. This is the first painting I did.

Most people like it, especially the asymmetrical balance and sense of depth. They talked to me about the repetition of windows - it was too much.

2. This is the Black-White painting of my second drawing.

 3. My my attempts to find the right colors!

I have to say that, while painting the drawings I had some challenges trying to create a really nice texture and sense of depth, I loved to test the variations of red, green, some mixtures of this two colors, and create my own black!

Outside Lies Magic - I

Hey,

This is a resume of my work in this project OLM.

"What is this about?"

I should look more carefully to some marginalized place, a place people overlooked and probably have never noticed very well. Then, I would create a collage made with this place but with different scales, proportions, arrangements, in order to make it interesting painting. In addition, the collage should enhance my ideas and feeling in this place.

So that I chose this back entrance:

This area works as a parking to food carts, and it is always full at night and weekends. In almost 1 year walking through this area, I had never noticed it!

The "progress"of my collages was this:

Experiment 01

Experiment 2

Experiment 3

I had started to work with the Experiment 3, until I received the critique of the work from my classmates in class. There, I realized that my work with painting was to simple - and that so much repetition in the work was not working very well. Then, I decided a last one try to create a design for this place.

         What I did?
I re-thought the reasons why I had chosen this place.
         1. The sense of something old.
         2. The scary walks at night through it.
         3. The sense of claustrophobic, small place to enter, with high walls.
         4. It could have more green/organic life.
         5. There are many people living there, so this place has a important role in people's life.
         6. For those who see from outside, it seems impenetrable.

As a result, I got this:
Final Design for OLM Project

And that's what I am working with!
